QUAD CITIES LARGEST EMPLOYERS

The Quad Cities has had a long history as the Farm Equipment capitol of the Midwest. This changed in the 80's when Caterpillar, Formall, International Harvester, Case and Deere all cut back or left the area entirely. Manufacturing has continued to be the main source of employment as many smaller companies have opened here to take advantage of the displaced labor pool. Today, there are more people employed here than at any time in our history. The economy is much more diversified making the area much less prone to recession than in previous generations.

Some of the largest employers are:

• Deere & Company - farm and industrial equipment manufacturing. Moline, now employing 7,490.
• Rock Island Arsenal - Since the Civil War this island on the Rock Island side of the Mississippi River has been a U S Military installation and manufacturing center which now employs 6,573.
• Genesis Medical Center located in several Iowa hospitals and clinics, employ about 2,900.
• Alcoa (Aluminum Company of America), has a major aluminum milling plant here in Riverdale and employs about 2,500.
• IBP the meat processors have a major facility at Joslin and employ about 2,200.
• Trinity Medical Center with hospitals in Moline and Rock Island employ about 2,147 at present.
• Oscar Mayer Food Corp., have been in Davenport for years on W 2end, now employ about 1,650.
• Case Corp, equipment manufacturers in East Moline employ about 1,500.
• Eagle Food Centers, the Quad Cities based food chain also employ about 1,500
• MidAmerican Energy, the utility company employs about 900.
• Illini Hospital in Silvis employs about 800.
• Montgomery Kone elevator employs about 630.
• Von Maur department store chain employs about 550.
• Norcross Footwear of Rock Island produces wet weather boots of all kinds and employs about 430.
• Modern Woodmen of America, the fraternal insurance company of Rock Island employs about 400
• 3M of Cordova employs about 360
• Sivyer Steel Company of Bettendorf about 350.
• Ralston Purina food processing of Davenport about 335.
